Local students get involved with The Student Conservation Association

Earlier this summer a local crew including members of the Student Conservation Association set out to install rain containers across Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, to householders who had requested them.

The students involved in SCA install eight to 12 rain containers per day – and last reported, they have installed 171 and have a goal to reach 200 by the end of their summer. Based on the excellent and efficient progress they have made, another 200 will be installed by staff state Sen. Jim Ferlo hired for the project and one of the SCA students.

The Student Conservation Association is one of several contractors in the city works that assigns youths to summer jobs. In the city of Pittsburgh, Nancy Schaefer, program manager for the local student workers, has six crews of 70 participants this year.

For three years now, the SCA has worked in the area of Hazelwood, PA, and along with installing rain containers, the SCA participants build trails, do cleanup and garden work, and more.
