New Version of Online Reader


In the summer of 2011, CengageBrain rolled out a new online reader. We're happy to announce that the new online reader has been upgraded with improved features that provide CengageBrain users with an even more robust eBook experience. The reader improvements do not replace any features or functionality but simply add to and enhance them.

Is the iPad application compatible with the latest operating system update?


Yes. CengageBrain leverages CourseSmart's apps for mobile access. CourseSmart's iPad application versions 3.0.4 and higher are compatible with iOS5 including the latest release iOS5.1.

Prior to upgrading your iPad's operating system, please complete the following steps:

  1. update all of your apps to the latest version available on the iTunes app store
  2. synchronize your iPad with the iTunes application installed on your laptop or desktop computer

This will help ensure that all of your iPad apps are preserved and continue to function correctly after you update your iPad's operating system.

If you are unable to locate CourseSmart's iPad app after upgrading your device. Please download it again from the iTunes App store.

Who will be able to access and use the new online reader?


New and existing CengageBrain users will be able to fully utilize the improvements made to the reader. The reader will be automatically available to users, no downloading required.

Do users have to use the new version of the online reader?


No, there is the option to revert back to the old ("Classic") version. By default, users will be moved into the new online reader after 3/14. However, users have the option to switch back to the old reader.

Here's how: In the upper right corner of the new online reader display, there will be a link to the Classic Reader. Select the link and the Reader will switch to the old reader.

Once you switch back to the Classic version, you will remain in this version every time you access your eBook. If you want to try the new version while in the Classic mode, simply click on the "Try New Reader" link beneath the "Back to my Bookshelf" link.

Why was the new version of the online reader created?


We continually strive to provide customers with the best-in-class overall experience and options when accessing digital course materials from the devices they currently own and use.

The new version of the online reader offers new and improved features in three primary areas: Overall User experience, Tools and Viewing Options.

The reader improvements do not replace any features or functions but instead, add more functionality to our existing browser-based reader.

Which devices will the new online reader work on?


Any Internet-connected, browser-based desktop, laptop PC or Mac that is vector-based graphics-enabled will work best with the new version of the online reader

Although this browser based reader will work with many other devices including tablets and smartphones, the following dedicated apps (from CourseSmart but usable for accessing CengageBrain content) are recommended:

iPad - eTextbooks for iPad App

iPhone / iTouch - eTextbooks for the iPhone App

Android Tablet 2.3 and less - CourseSmart for Android App

Android 3.0 Tablet and higher - CourseSmart Mobile Web App

Kindle Fire, Nook Color and Nook Tablets - CourseSmart Mobile Web App

No changes have been made to the CourseSmart reader apps for mobile devices at this time.

Which browsers work with the new online reader?


Our current reader's browsers also support the new online reader. They include:

- IE 7.0 or higher (Windows)
- Firefox 3.5 or higher (Windows/Mac)
- Safari 3.0 (Mac)
- Google Chrome

Note that users with browsers that are vector-based graphics-enabled will have greater utilization of the new features.

Can I still print pages?


Yes. Printing with the new online reader is the same as the current reader. Users may print up to 10 pages at a time, with a limit of 150% of the total pages in a digital book.

  • Notes Management
  • View all of your notes, highlights and annotations at once through the My Notes tab.
  • Print a summary of all of your notes, highlights and annotations.
  • Apply text formatting (font and size,) to notes.
  • Assign notes to highlighted text (highlight annotations).
  • Reveal content of notes within the context of a page.

Highlighting

  • Activate highlight function using a single click.
  • Add notes to highlighted text.
  • View a list of highlights and navigate directly to the page for a highlight.
  • Print out highlights and highlights that have notes.

Bookmarking

  • Create bookmarks for specific pages.
  • Quickly navigate to their saved bookmark locations in a single click.

Copy and Paste

  • Basic copy and paste without the need for an interstitial dialog box.

Search

  • Quick and easy navigation between search results and book contents.
  • Search-in-Book feature allows the user to view page content alongside the user's search results.

Viewing Options

  • Scale images and graphics to any size.
  • Multi-level Zoom - Text clarity preserved at all levels of zoom.
  • Full Page Spread -View pages side-by-side, "2-up" mode.
  • Scrolling - View pages in continuous "scrolling" mode.
  • Thumbnail View - View small thumbnail images of many pages, and click on a thumbnail to navigate to that page.

What are the various viewing options?


Full Page Spread: View pages side-by-side, "2-up" mode.

Continuous Scrolling: Users can scroll up or down to navigate through a continuous stream of pages.

Thumbnail: View small thumbnail images of many pages. The user will be able to click on a thumbnail image to navigate to that specific page.

Users can still view a single page at a time.

Can users switch between the old version (now called Classic version) and the new version of the online reader?

What happens if I make notes and changes with the new version of the online reader then try to access them while offline?


The offline reading experience will continue to look and function similar to the Classic reader.

All notes and highlights developed online with the new online reader will be preserved when a book is checked out for offline use. However, any bookmarks created with the new version of the online reader will not be available in the offline mode.
